What opponents of visiting an embassy say
- An embassy is the territory of the state you are contacting, meaning you are essentially leaving U.S. territory and returning to the country of persecution.
- If you go to the embassy, it means you are not in danger in your home country and do not fear persecution. Therefore, if the U.S. finds out, you will lose your case. Those who are wanted will allegedly be detained immediately.
- You are seeking protection (services) from the same government you are requesting asylum from.
- ICE allegedly sends you to the embassy on purpose in order to deport you.

1) Embassy territory
See the Wikipedia definition of an embassy and read the last paragraph: “Contrary to a common belief, the Vienna Convention does not define embassy premises as the territory of the sending state.”
Moreover, if it were the territory of another country, it would mean you leave the U.S. and then re-enter it. In that case, border officers would have to be stationed at embassy entrances and exits, stamping passports and issuing I-94s.
Conclusion: by visiting an embassy, you clearly do not leave U.S. territory.
2) Can you be detained at an embassy

4) ICE and the claim that they send you to the embassy to deport you
This is my opinion: ICE officers generally do not care whether you visited an embassy or not. Their job is to keep track of you, know where you are, and be able to locate and deport you if a court issues a removal order. Each officer has hundreds of cases and dozens of daily tasks. They usually do not monitor such details as long as you do not violate conditions or leave the permitted area. They are frequently asked about passports and often prefer to send people to resolve that issue elsewhere.
Conclusion: if you have the option, it is better not to take the risk.
