How much does it cost?

As of July 22, 2025, a fee has been introduced for filing an asylum application (Form I-589, initial filing).

In addition, under HR-1 law, all foreign nationals with a pending asylum application are required to pay an annual asylum fee (AAF).

Fees

For Fiscal Year 2025 (October 1, 2024 through September 30, 2025), the fee is set at $100 for both the initial filing and the AAF.

This amount is reviewed each fiscal year and may increase in line with inflation.

Current fees (FY2025):

Initial filing: $100
Annual asylum fee (AAF): $100

Fees for FY2026:

Initial filing: $100
Annual asylum fee (AAF): $102
