Many people try to complete the form on their own, but over the past few days there has been a significant increase in questions related to this issue. If you have completed half of the form and the fields in Parts B and C are inactive and you cannot type in them, or if you have not started filling out the form yet, this mini guide is for you.
How to properly complete the I-589 PDF
1. Download and install Adobe Acrobat Reader
2. Download a clean version of the form I-589 from the USCIS website
3. Go to Part B or Part C, mark an x in the Yes box, and enter text in the activated field.
Important:
- simply type the text - do not click “edit” or “fill”
- complete the form on a computer, not on a phone
- do not fill it out in a browser; use Adobe Acrobat Reader
- do not use an old “non-working” version of the form
- before starting, check that the fields are active
- make sure you are using an English keyboard layout
❗️Important: some people use the “comment” feature or insert text, but this is only a temporary workaround. It may cause issues when printing or opening the file on other devices. I do not recommend this method; it is better to complete the form correctly from the start.
